What happens to my waste? How much is recycled?

We are committed to recycling as much of the waste we collect as possible. Firstly, we make sure that ALL waste removed from your household or site is taken to the best local Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), and that whaetver CAN be recycled, WILL be recycled. We have access to all MRFs across the country to ensure that wherever possible, our customers' waste is sorted and re-cycled, thus reducing the volume of waste going to landfill, and therefore minimising the polluting effects of the waste we process, and maximising the amount of energy saved.

Why should I care if my waste gets recycled?

Recycling as much of our household waste as possible can really make a difference to our environment in terms of both helping to preserve increasingly scarce natural resources like fossil fuels and rainforests, and minimising the polluting effects of simply dumping our waste into landfill sites. The arguments for recycling are quite well known, but people often ask 'what difference can I make anyway'? Well, it's vital that we all contribute, and you CAN each make a difference. Here are some interesting facts and figures that might help to convince you of this:

  1. Each person in the UK will, on average, produce just over half a tonne of waste, or 512 kilograms each year.
  2. The unreleased energy contained in the rubbish in an average dustbin in an average year could power a television for up to 5,000 hours.
  3. Up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in your dustbin could be recycled.
  4. If all cans in the UK were recycled, we would need 14 million fewer dustbins.
  5. Recycling aluminum cans requires only about five per cent of the energy needed to produce aluminum in the first place.
  6. Glass is 100% recyclable and can be used again and again, but glass that is thrown away and ends up in landfills will NEVER decompose.
  7. One recycled glass bottle could save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes.
  8. 12.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard are used annually in the UK, and it takes 24 trees to make just 1 tonne of newspaper.
  9. Recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials.
  10. Many families throw away about 40kg of perfectly recyclable plastic per year. Just one recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours.
